Hundreds of racegoers dressed to impress as Doncaster’s Betfred St Leger Festival got off to a glamorous start with Ladies Day.
The four-day festival is a particularly special one this year, marking the 250th anniversary of the world-famous St Leger – the oldest classic horse race in the world.
The historic race was first run in 1776 and this year’s 250th running will take centre stage on Saturday, when the Princess Royal is due to attend Doncaster Racecourse and present the coveted Betfred St Leger Trophy to the winning owner.
But the first day (Thursday) day was all about fashion as racegoers arrived in their finest outfits for Ladies Day.
The sun came out over the course, though some gusts of wind sent fascinators flying as crowds made their way around the racecourse.
The course was awash with colour, with yellow appearing to be the colour of the season, alongside bright oranges and greens.
Racegoers of all ages got involved, with children as young as 10 among those dressed to the nines for the occasion.
Queues formed for the Style Awards, presented by Daisy Tomlinson and Mark Wright, as racegoers waited for their outfits to be judged.
This year’s Betfred St Leger carries a £700,000 prize fund, with Betfred Derby winner Christmas Day among the 27 entries for the historic race.
The festival continues at Doncaster Racecourse until Sunday, September 13, with the 250th Betfred St Leger taking place on Saturday.
