After lockdown forced her to cancel the big party she had planned, the mum-of-two decided she was going to have to get a bit creative in figuring out a way to celebrate with family and friends.

And so Kavita dusted off the DJ decks she had bought herself months earlier, and set about creating the perfect party playlist.

“I decided to DJ my own birthday party on Facebook Live,” she said.

“I’d bought the decks months earlier, thinking 50 would be a good age to learn a new skill, but hadn’t had time to do much with them.

“When lockdown kicked in, it seemed as good a time as any to see what I could do.”

Kavita extended an open invitation to family and friends to join her virtually in her living room at 8pm on her birthday, for her debut DJ spot.

The single mum said: “It was a big risk, and I was really nervous, but it ended up being so much fun.

“My children helped me to create a disco in my front lounge and family were able to drop in from Leicester, and friends tuned in from Latvia and New York. I think there were about 80 of us in total.

“It ended up making what could have been quite a mundane birthday really special.”

And the experience gave Kavita, who is a lawyer by day, the DJ bug.

Since then she’s already played another spot on Facebook Live - in tribute to the NHS - and will be taking to Facebook again at 5pm today for another set to mark VE Day.

“I think my kids think I’m having a midlife crisis,” she laughed.

“I love it though, I think music is in my blood as my dad was a classical music teacher, so I grew up around music.

“With my 50th birthday on the horizon, it seemed like the perfect time, as I got ready to hit this milestone, to do something different.

“Learning to DJ was on my bucket list.”

Kavita’s VE Day set will start at 5pm today on the Sheffield Lockdown group page.
