Sheffield Crucible Theatre hosts exciting series of plays in Studio second space

Next up tonight (Thursday, January 23 is a comic and thought-provoking show about the real Northern Powerhouse, northern women.

Where There’s Muck, There’s Bras is described a funny, gentle, naughty and subversive performance.

The show uncovers the hidden history of the writers, scientists, sportswomen, politicians, protesters, musicians and other heroines who represent the grit, determination and spirit of the women of the North.

Telling the story of a community torn apart by racial division, Trojan Horse is based on the real-life story that hit the national press, accusing ‘hardline’ Muslim teachers and governors of plotting extremism in Birmingham schools.

Originally developed with Leeds Playhouse, Trojan Horse is the story of a community under fire, ‘British values’ and the culture of the Government’s Prevent strategy, aimed at combatting political extremism in young people.

Theatre company Lung previously tackled the Government’s involvement in the Iraq War in Chilcot.

Adapted from the testimonies of those at the heart of the Government’s inquiry, Trojan Horse in the Studio on Tuesday, February 4.

Then there’s an angry and funny love song to a lost generation in The Political History of Smack and Crack.

Political theatre message of hope

Tracing their own lives from the epicentre of the riots in 1981 to their present-day survival on the streets of Manchester, Mandy and Neil chronicle the fallout for communities crushed by the heroin epidemic which broke out at the height of Thatcherism.

A riotous and tender portrayal of two lifelong addicts, shot through with home truths about the road to recovery, it’s in the Studio on Wednesday, February 5.

Finally, Sheffield’s internationally-famed company Forced Entertainment presents To Move in Time – a new monologue written by Tim Etchells.

An unnamed protagonist speculates playfully about what he’d do if he were able to travel backwards and forwards in time.

From fantasies of changing the present to obsessions with everyday events in the past to dreaming up ways to get rich from knowledge of the future, the text is an unfolding compulsive thought process.

Tyrone Huggins, who has starred at the Crucible and on national tour in the ground-breaking show Black Men Walking, performs in the Studio on February 7 and 8.

All shows are on in the Studio, which is the Crucible’s second space.

Described as a “dark and funny story about expectations, privilege and partying”, the play is set at an ill-fated music festival put on by a spoilt pop star to market his latest album.
