Santa Baby composer joins forces with Sheffield musician

New Yorker, Phil Springer, the composer of the Christmas classic Santa Baby, which was first sung by Eartha Kitt in 1953, reached out to Sheffield's young multi-instrumentalist, Max Restaino, and asked him if he'd like to work together on a new Christmas song.

Making up the song writing trio for the new Christmas cracker ‘Here for Christmas’ is former Radio 1 DJ and respected music industry luminary, Mike Read who has had his songs recorded by such artists as Cliff Richard, David Essex, and Barry and Robin Gibb.

American composer Phil Springer had originally written Max’s new single ‘Here for Christmas’ in 1948 but it didn’t have any lyrics. He knew it was special but stored it away and then 72 years later sent it to Max, who fell in love with it straight away , instantly wrote the chorus and then worked with Mike Read on the rest of the lyrics. The result is a jazz/pop infused Christmas cracker of a song combining the sound of a classic golden era with Max’s modern-day interpretation which showcases his effortless, soulful, smooth vocals.

Max has won many awards including a PRS Songwriting award, which came as a result of Max being featured in a SKY TV programme called Tin Pan Alley.

Phil Springer, aged 94, said:“It’s been great fun working with Max and Mike in this overseas collaboration.”

The song is set to be released on November 27.
