PREVIEW: Tony Christie to celebrate 80th birthday with Yorkshire homecoming

Yorkshire's own singing legend Tony Christie will celebrate his 80th birthday and a triumphant career of over 50-years in showbusiness with a special homecoming.

Tony Christie: A Life in Music - celebrating 80 years, presented by Mayo Music Ltd, will see him performing live at Leeds City Varieties Music Hall on Sunday, July 9, 2023, at 7.30pm.

To commemorate his milestone Tony will be performing a select handful of shows along with his band – full details and links below.

His unmistakable powerful vocals have captivated generations and he is known for his incredible showmanship and a setlist that packs a punch.

Expect all his biggest hits, including signature crowd pleaser (Is This The Way to) Amarillo?, Avenues & Alleyways, Walk Like A Panther, Las Vegas and I Did What I Did For Maria, as well as show-stopping covers from the late greats who helped shape his career.

His recording of (Is This the Way To) Amarillo was a double UK chart success – reaching number 18 on its original release, in 1971, but then topping the UK singles chart in 2005 in aid of the charity Comic Relief, promoted with a video featuring comedian Peter Kay.

The shows will be a celebration of a true Yorkshire legend, born Anthony Fitzgerald, in Conisbrough, near Doncaster. His actually 80th birthday is on Tuesday, April 25, 2023.

Despite living with dementia, which he was diagnosed with two years ago, Tony vows to keep on singing, entertaining audiences live with his incredible showmanship and unmistakable powerful vocals. He and says there will be "no walk-offs".

His resilience in the face of adversity and his commitment to his craft continue to inspire his fans.

Tony's positive attitude towards his condition is inspiring and he is living proof that age is just a number. Tony has a string of dates and TV appearances coming up, and his dementia isn't going to hold him back.

"It's just one of those things. I was diagnosed with it about two years ago, and I've been on very strong tablets ever since, which has knocked it down, and I'm coping with it," Tony said.

"It's not really affecting my life. I don't even think about it. I just carry on with what I do, and that's it.

"This year will be one of his busiest yet.”
