New release People Like Me and You was a hotly tipped hit and smashed into the UK album charts at number four – their third top 10 hit, writes Graham Walker and Richard Derbyshire.

In celebration of the album’s release the Bolton On Dearne based four-piece teamed up with York based brewery Brew York to release a pilsner named after them.

And it’s proving to be another big hit.

The first batch sold out in hours but fans can now order more at brewyork.co.uk/product/sherlocks-pilsner.

Frontman and songwriter Kiaran Crook, his brother and drummer Brandon, lead guitarist Alex Procter and bassist Trent Jackson opened the first cans thanking fans for getting them higher up the charts than ever before

“Massive love to every single person for getting behind this band. You, the fans, have given us our highest ever chart position. Incredible,” they said, in a joint statement.

Chart organisers say this week was a “seriously tough competition” with less than 150 chart units separately the top two artists alone.

It pipped other new entries from Miles Kane and hip-hop comeback trio N-Dubz but was held off the top spot by Irish singer Cian Ducrot, the eighth studio album from nu-metal band Skidred and last week’s number one Utopia by Travis Scott.

The album was given a boost when fans turned out to buy it ands meet the band for signings and photos at a pop-up shop on the steps of Sheffield City Hall last week.

It was part of a determined campaign by the hard-working band over the past three months which saw the lads take their new music to independent festivals and intimate venues around the country, before a frantic series of publicity events.

Supporters got behind the band downloading and buying the album in alternative formats, and voicing support on social media, many saying it is their best work so far.

There was also support on social media from Rotherham’s chart-toppers The Reytons, Greater Manchester’s Lottery Winners, plus East Lothian’s The Rah’s and Wolverhampton’s The Jack Fletcher Band who are both supporting The Sherlocks on some dates of their autumn tour.

The album is also a success for Liverpool Motor Museum studio-based producer Al Groves, as well as frontman of Sheffield band The Warehouse Club Nathan Kobierowski who mixed the music.

Family friend of the Crook brothers John Watson, who provided spoken words on the final track Watson, is also celebrating the band’s success.

The Sherlocks are no strangers to the top ten, with their debut Live for The Moment and their previous record, World I Understand, both big hits.

But having their highest chart position with their fourth record is another achievement for an independent DIY band with no label and no music industry or national media backing.

After touring the country’s smaller music venues, The Sherlocks became the first unsigned band to sell-out The Leadmill in Sheffield since Arctic Monkeys and went on to have the biggest selling debut album by a band in 2016.

Alex and Trent joined the band in 2020, recording the band’s third album at Rockfield Studios with Manic Street Preachers producer Dave Eringa, before making their live performance debut with the Crook brothers on the main stage at Tramlines in 2021.

The Sherlocks supported Kaiser Chiefs on their arena tour in 2022 and now look forward to headlining their own shows again this autumn, including Sheffield O2 Academy on Saturday November 4 – for tickets CLICK HERE
