Chinese New Year celebrations in Sheffield

The annual Sheffield Chinese New Year show has been running since 2004 in the grade II listed building Sheffield City Hall, situated in the heart of the city centre, and this year the event celebrates the ‘year of the rat.’The event takes place on Monday January 27 with a pre-event at 4.30 pm in the ballroom where guests can try traditional Chinese food, calligraphy and painting, watch a warm-up performance and experience the lively atmosphere of the Chinese New Year. The main show follows in the main theatre at 7pm.Visitors can expect authentic costumes and award-winning productions from both the local community and entertainers all the way from China.Every year, over 2,000 people of all backgrounds come together to celebrate and watch this show which is strongly supported by the Sheffield government, the Chinese Embassy and Chinese Consulate who will be giving speeches at the event.Speaking about the celebration, event promoter, Kerre Chen, said: “This show provide the chance for oversea Chinese to celebrate their New Year, at the same time promotes Chinese Culture in the region.
