Armed patrols after shooting

Broomhall was today described by detectives as “a priority” for armed officers from the South Yorkshire Police task force.

Local residents rang police just before midnight to report hearing the sound of possible gun-shots in the William Street area of the estate.

Shortly afterwards an 18-year-old man turned up at the Northern General Hospital with a gunshot wound to his leg.

The attack had not been reported to police by the victim - but when questioned he did tell officers he had been shot on William Street in Broomhill.

The teenager was detained in hospital for one night and treated before being discharged and allowed home.

Police suspect the attack was deliberately “targeted” but say the motive is “still unclear”.

Today Det Insp Jade Brice, who is leading the investigation, told The Star armed police had been based in Broomhall in the wake of the shooting.

“Armed response officers are still serving the rest of the force but at the moment Broomhall is a priority,” he said. “We have heightened patrols in the area involving the Broomhall Safer Neighbourhood Area and armed officers from our task force.

“This is to provide reassurance to the local community and as a preventative and detective measure.”

He said door-to-door inquiries had been carried out around Broomhall to establish whether there were any witnesses to the shooting.
