Angling team nets £1,930 for hospital

AMATEUR anglers reeled in a prize catch for the neo-natal surgical unit at Sheffield Children's Hospital.

A team of 20 ladies from Southey Social Club took part in a charity fishing match in Wales and raised almost 1,930.

The event was organised by club member John Kemp, aged 49, as a thank you to hospital staff who treated his granddaughter Morgan-Mai Clayton.

Morgan, who will celebrate her first birthday next Thursday, weighed just 3lb when she was born six weeks prematurely to mum Deana, 19, of Shiregreen.

Her intestines had also developed outside her body and she spent six weeks at the surgical unit.

"It was like handling a baby chick when she was born," said John. "Morgan was so fragile - at times it was touch and go.

"They have done wonders for Morgan and really looked after her when she needed it. Thanks to them she pulled through and is now doing great."

As part of the charity event the lady anglers took on the role of catching and netting the fish, while their husbands set up the lines.

John, an angling coach, said: "The day had a great atmosphere and we hope to do it again next year."

David Vernon-Edwards, director of Sheffield Children's Hospital Charity said: "It's great to see people getting involved in fundraising, especially people who have had a personal experience of the hospital. The money raised will go towards continuing the vital care we provide for youngsters."
