400-up as quartet hit the century

A VERY special four of a kind!

Four of Sheffield's most senior citizens have celebrated a remarkable coincidence - after reaching their 100th birthdays within four days of each other.

The centenarians certainly kept Sheffield Lord Mayor Arthur Dunworth busy as he dashed around the city delivering telegrams from the Queen.

Kathleen Thompson, Emily Cawthorne, Mary Ellen Marshall and Pearl Roberts and all marked their special birthdays with parties at separate care homes around the city.

Members of Kathleen's large family turned up for her surprise bash at Cotleigh Residential Home, Hackenthorpe, where she is the first resident to reach a century.

Meanwhile, Emily Cawthorne joined an elite group at Twelve Trees Care Home in Nether Edge when she turned 100.

She is only the second resident to reach the milestone.

Emily, who has lived at the home for just over a year, celebrated by having tea and cakes with family and friends.

Mary Ellen Marshall is the oldest resident at Warren Park Nursing Home in Chapeltown.

Staff at Mary's home served up a special birthday cake with one candle to represent every decade of her life.

And members of her family joined Mary as she opened her telegram from the Queen.

Last but not least it was Pearl Roberts' 100th Birthday.

Pearl, who is the oldest resident at Ash House Residential Care Home in Dore, was joined by her daughter Margaret and grandson John who delivered her telegram from the Queen.
