What David McGoldrick said about prospect of Sheffield United fans returning to Bramall Lane for Burnley clash

Hopes were raised that United’s fans would be able to see United’s last match of the current campaign when prime minister Boris Johnson revealed his roadmap out of lockdown.

Under the plans, 10,000 fans or 25 per cent of capacity, whichever is lower, may be allowed for the final game of the season, which sees United take on Burnley at Bramall Lane.

Although the plans have not been finalised – they may yet be scrapped over fears over “integrity”, which did not seem to be too much of an issue when clubs in tier two areas were allowed fans in for a brief period earlier this season – they do raise fresh hope that the end of behind-closed-doors football is nigh.

And McGoldrick for one would be delighted if fans were allowed in for the Burnley clash.

“What a game that would be if we could get them back,” the United striker said ahead of Sunday’s clash against Liverpool at Bramall Lane.

“We’ve missed them massively and they drive us on so much. The sooner they’re back the better and if it’s at the end of this season, then great. If not, and it’s the start of the next season, what a buzz that will be to have them back behind us.

“Not having fans has changed the game, a million per cent.

“We went to Stamford Bridge and got changed about 20 minutes around the corner and had to get a taxi to the pitch. It ruins the atmosphere completely.

“The good players haven’t got the pressure of the fans on them, so they’re more relaxed. It’s helped some players and people like us, who need that extra oomph and adrenalin, it’s not helped us at all.

“We have performed well in a lot of games but haven’t got the results, which is the difference. In both boxes, we haven’t been good enough – keeping it out and putting it in their net. That’s where you get punished in this league and we haven’t done what we’ve needed to do.”
