Watch: One Direction fans sing and release balloons in Sheffield in memory of Liam Payne

Fans mourning the loss of Liam Payne gathered in Sheffield on Sunday to remember the young pop star.

A vigil was held at the Sheffield Covid Memorial and on the steps of City Hall in tribute to the One Direction pop star who died on October 16.

Fans came together to sing songs by the X Factor group and release balloons in memory of the 31-year-old who died in Buenos Aires last week.

The memorial has been covered top to bottom with letters from heartbroken fans, and dozens of flower bouquets have been laid at the base.

It comes as Sheffield City Council has confirmed it will not clear the tributes away until after Liam’s funeral.

Councillor Joe Otten said in a statement: “Members of the public have laid memorials and tributes at the city’s Covid Memorial for Liam Payne and they will remain in place until after his funeral. We expect that more people will want to continue to pay their respects to him.”
