Unemployed plasterer and tiler caught with drugs in police raid at partner's South Yorkshire home

Sheffield Crown Court heard on February 23 how Bradley Hughes, aged 29, of Treetown Crescent, Treeton, Rotherham, was found with cannabis, a cannabis plant and a pepper spray after a police raid at his partner’s home on Brook Fold, Thurcroft, Rotherham.
Gordon Stables, prosecuting, said police seized bags, scales, cannabis, a cannabis plant and a pepper spray.

Hide AdHughes told police the drugs were for personal use only and he thought the pepper spray, which was found in a van, was a rape repellent left by a friend and he was not aware it was unlawful.
Hughes pleaded guilty to possessing the class B drug cannabis, producing cannabis, and to possessing a prohibited weapon after the raid on November 15, 2018.
Matthew Burden, defending, said Hughes who suffers with anxiety and poorly-controlled diabetes smokes cannabis due to the pain.
He added: “As a young man he had a terrible record for violence offences but since discovering cannabis he has been able to regulate his temper.”

Hide AdUnemployed plasterer and tiler Hughes had grown a single plant to avoid the drug trade, according to Mr Burden, and the defendant feels cannabis has been of benefit to him and wider society.
Mr Burden said he was not able to say Hughes will not continue using cannabis.
Judge Michael Slater sentenced Hughes to a 12-month community order with a 20-day Rehabilitation Activity Requirement.
The court heard Hughes’s partner previously received a two-year conditional discharge after admitting possessing cannabis.
