Officers are keen to speak to anyone who was driving or cycling on Rivelin Valley Road, near to the fire station on Saturday, January 16 at around 7pm and who has dash cam or helmet camera footage.

Between the hours of 6.15pm and 7.45pm a Cube electric bicycle was stolen by criminals who had attached their own D lock to preventing the owner from moving his own bike.

While the owner went to find tools to cut off the lock, the thieves returned and cut off both locks and stole the bike.

Police are also urging anyone who was out walking in the Rivelin Valley Road area who might recognise the bike and saw who stole it.

Anyone who returns to finds their bike has had an additional lock attached should call 999 according to officers, who say this is referred to as a ‘crime in action’ – when someone has appropriated your bike and by treating it like it is their own they have technically already stolen it (or at least attempted to).

Cyclists are encouraged to not leave their bike if it has been locked and instead wait until police arrive to help set it free.

Officers do not recommend people to directly confront or attempt a citizens arrest on thieves, who have attached a second lock to the bicycle, but instead urge residents to film them from a distance to discourage them from stealing the bike.

To avoid your property from being taken, cyclists should park their bikes in well-lit areas where there is CCTV or where people can see what is happening to it.

Police also encourage people to fit two types of lock to their bike, both a D lock and a cable lock around the wheels as many thieves will only come with the tools to tackle one type of locks.

To report information about the theft, call officers on non-emergency contact number 101.
