'They are very keen to press their opponents high up the pitch' - what Sheffield Wednesday can expect from Luton Town

The Owls will go into the game on the back of three successive losses, including Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat to promotion-chasing Brentford, which have left Neil Thompson’s men second-bottom in the Championship, but still only three points adrift of safety.

But what about the Hatters?

Well, they’re not in the best of form, either, and have won just one of their last seven league games and head into tomorrow’s clash in 17th place, 10 points ahead of Wednesday.

So, who makes Nathan Jones’ side tick and what have Hatters supporters made of their season to date?

We’ve spoken to Mike Simmonds, sports editor of The Star’s sister title Luton Today, for the inside track on the men from Kenilworth Road.

What have you made of Luton's season so far?

Luton’s season has been on the whole a very impressive one compared to last season when they were battling relegation for long periods and somehow escaped on the final day after looking certainties to go down.

They started in fine form when the campaign began which raised expectations among some supporters about a possible play-off push, although those have quietened down somewhat now.

The last few months have been tougher, with Town struggling to score goals, especially away from home, and not quite getting the results their performances deserve. However, to be 17th in the table and nine points clear of the drop with 15 games to go, is still a very healthy position to be in.

Who have been the stand-out performers for the Hatters and their main threats?

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been the top performer for the Hatters this season following his loan arrival from Leicester City in October.

The midfielder has been hugely impressive, particularly at home, showing just why the Foxes gave him a long term deal and see him as someone who could make his mark in the Premier League one day.

Although he has only made one start too, striker Elijah Adebayo, who joined on deadline day from Walsall is already exciting fans as well.

He gave an excellent display during the 1-1 draw with Millwall on Tuesday night, scoring his first goal for the club too.

Keeper Simon Sluga has also been in good form for the Hatters this season too. He struggled at times in his first year in English football last term, but has now cut out the mistakes and is looking a very solid presence between the posts.

What did supporters make of the club's business during the January transfer window?

Supporters were very happy with Town’s business during the window as they managed to bring in three players, two of them permanently as well.

Kal Naismith arrived on a free transfer from Wigan and is able to play in a number of positions, while Tom Ince was signed on loan from Stoke City.

The Potters attacker has had a fine career to date and it is hoped he can rediscover his form after what has been a tough time at the bet365 Stadium recently.

Meanwhile, striker Elijah Adebayo was also added on a permanent basis, Town shelling out an undisclosed fee to Walsall for his services.

Not a great deal was known about the forward but he has already shown signs that he could be a top signing with a goal and fine display on his debut.

What would be a successful season for Nathan Jones' men - where do you think they will finish?

A successful season for the Hatters would have been staying up after the tough year they had last year. However, those goals changed slightly after a decent start to the campaign with Nathan Jones at the helm where they put some points on the board early on.

For me, a good campaign would be steering well clear of the drop and not even flirting with going down on this occasion, climbing up into the mid-table positions and have their Championship status secure with four to five games still remaining.

What style of football (or system) should the Owls expect to come up against?

Luton try to pass the ball as much as possible, building from when they can and then going through the midfield players too, looking to fashion opportunities that way.

They are very keen to press their opponents high up the pitch as well, winning the ball back in advanced areas if they can.

With Adebayo in the side though they can also go slightly longer on occasion as the forward is a very imposing presence who is excellent in the air as well.
