Suspect in stabbing outside Sheffield mosque tried to set fire to his car, police say

A man suspected of inflicting life-threatening wounds in a stabbing outside a Sheffield mosque set fire to his car after the attack, police believe.

The 20-year-old suspect was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident on Saturday afternoon outside the Markazi Jamia Masjid mosque on Industry Road, Darnall.

He has since been released on police bail.

The alleged victim, a 35-year-old man, ran into the mosque pleading for help. He remains in hospital in a critical condition, police said on Monday evening.

Detective inspector Ben Wood from South Yorkshire Police said: “As our investigation has progressed we now believe that the suspect was driving a black Nissan Qashqai.

“Prior to the victim being attacked, the car was parked up in the Malvern Road, Industry Road area.”

Worshippers helped the injured man until police and paramedics arrived at the scene.

Detective inspector Wood added: “Following the attack, the vehicle is driven to Whitby Road, close to Fisher Lane, where the suspect attempts to set fire to the vehicle while it is parked.

“CCTV captures two vehicles drive pass the suspect whilst he is attempting to do this, was this you? Did you witness a man attempting to set fire to a car? If so we are very keen to speak to you as part of our enquiries.”

The mosque was forced to close for the rest of the day following the alleged attack, with some prayers cancelled. It has since reopened.
