You're stupid - VIDEO

BRENDAN Ingle, Sheffield boxing's most distinguished ambassador, today launched a broadside on Junior Witter's world title opponent - saying some of his remarks were "stupid and embarrassing".

Vivian Harris had earlier lit the touch-paper for tonight's lightwelterweight WBC bout at Doncaster Dome by accusing the Sheffielder of cowardice.

It was an astonishing slur, given the fact that Witter is holder of the highest-regarded belt.

Harris said of Witter's unorthodox methods: "He has an awkward style. He fights a bit like a coward."

Today Ingle, a veteran of four decades in Sheffield boxing, said: "I cannot understand why Harris would say such a thing. Anybody who climbs into a ring in the first place is anything but a coward.

"Was Muhammad Ali a coward when he hit and ran from Joe Frazer. Or was he just smart?

"Benny Leonard was a terrific defensive fighter - was he one?" asked Ingle.

"Harris doesn't know what he is on about. It's a stupid thing to say, an embarrassment.

"Junior is an attacking counter-puncher who has won British, European, Commonwealth championships and now a world title.

"He hasn't got a mark on his face at 33. Harris is confusing skill with cowardice."

Witter shrugged off the criticism.

"I'll do what I have to do to win. It's about seeing the shots coming and moving out of the way!" he said.
