Yorkshire title hopes renewed

YORKSHIRE made stealthy progress back towards the top of the County Champ-ionship Division One table by bowling out Warwick-shire cheaply on day one at Scarborough, as they seek to stay in the running for the title.

Realistically needing to win all their remaining three matches to have a shot at this year's silverware, they displayed their pace-bowling prowess to new signing Inzamam-ul-Haq by seeing off the visitors for only 129 - England seamer Matthew Hoggard snaring Darren Maddy and Kumar Sangakkara for ducks on his way to figures of four for 33.

But on another day of miserable weather precluding plenty of play around the country, Yorkshire's reply was limited to only 25 for none as bad light frustrated them at North Marine Road.

Yorkshire should not feel too hard done by, however - because the elements were much kinder to them than to table-toppers Sussex, who have two matches in hand on the White Rose but suffered another washout yesterday at The Oval - where a ball is yet to be bowled by either them or strugglers Surrey after the first two scheduled days.

There was a full and hectic day of cricket, by contrast, between Glamorgan and Derbyshire at Cardiff in the Second Division.

An undefeated 61 from the unlikely bat of number nine Graham Wagg allowed Derbyshire to salvage 206 all out, despite five for 62 from former England off-spinner Robert Croft.

The Welshmen then replied with 179 for five, young opener Gareth Rees contributing 61.
