Yorkshire and Derbyshire League: Ward and Hellewell do the damage for Holmesfield

It was a good day for Division One Holmesfield’s Will Hellewell and David Ward, who claimed 4-52 and 4-21 respectively as Sheffield Collegiate were bowled out for 164. Then, 66 from Hellewell and 57no from Ward steered Holmesfield to the win and top place in the division.

Not far behind are Hollinsend Meths. They bowled out Sheffield University Staff for 119 (N Thew 4-19) and won by three wickets. In third place are De La Salle, who were bowled out for 126 against reigning champions Parkhead, who subsided to 101 all out in the face of some canny bowling from Mark Gayle (4-18). A low scoring affair saw Totley Sports dismissed for just 87 (Abbas 5-24). In reply, Hathersage capitulated for just 57 (Ilyas 5-14).

Wayne Hughes’ 76 saw Stocksbridge post 180-9 at home to Sheffield Civil Service. The Servants made a game reply, but fell four runs short at 176ao (J Rotchell 53 H Younis 48).

TRS continue to set the pace at the head of Division Two. They were bowled out at home for 181 (V Khan 62no E Hallam 4-52) but were irresistible in the second innings, sending Hollinsend Meths II back for just 88. Equally impressive were second placed Sheffield Centralians, who notched up 218-9 (M Denning 66) on the road at Hundall, who were dismissed for 106 (C Lenoir 3-18). Shock of the day came at Ashford in the Water, who posted 159ao (S Ellis 75 C Bourne 4-22) against high-flying Hallam III, who fell for 71.

Kevin Rowney took 6-10. Calver claimed a first win with 216ao (Boot 56 Cork 41 Maxwell 6-27) at home to Sheffield Medics, who fell for just 75.

Hallam IV hit the top of the Division Three table with a win over De La Salle II. The scratch Salle side were dismissed for 115, which Hallam surpassed with six men to spare. Looking ominous in second place are Bakewell. They restricted Youlgrave Lodge to 112-9 thanks to a miserly 4-26 from Paul Fearn. Lee Tann (43no) and David Hadfield (46no) guided the Peak side to an eight wicket win. Telecom Sports hit up 160ao and in turn sent Grindleford back for 103. Stocksbridge II were unable to overcome a player shortage and conceded their game against Coal Aston III.

In Division Four, at Graves Park, Richmond stole a march on leaders Whittington Wanderers. Despite being bowled out for 140 (M Rose 31 A Callaghan 4-24), the home side managed to dismiss the Wanderers for 109 (A Johnson 35 S Burton 4-36 A Radhakrishnan 4-24). Also on the march up the table are Sheffield University Staff II. They bowled Norton Woodseats for just 98 (T Gray 4-28). In a nailbiter, they edged over the line by a single wicket (G Hudson 4-19). Sheffield Centralians II could only muster up 128 (T Syed 6-32) at home to Telecom Sports II, who in turn fell for just 100 (Sasikanth 4-27). Dronfield Woodhouse were unable to raise a side to face Sheffield Civil Service II.

It was a successful day for Division Five leaders Hathersage II. They were bowled out for 144 (Overton 40 Taylor 4-35) at home to Tideswell. They inflicted the same fate on their visitors however for 130 (Hoverd 45 Hall 5-38). Hallam V claim second place. They dismissed Sheffield Transport II for 137 (D Grace 6-32) and edged over the line by a single wicket (S Wreggry 52no D Ram 4-30). Despite only making 75, Hollinsend Meths III fought back to bowl Whittington Wanderers II out for a mere 44. Sheffield Collegiate piled up 183 (Speck 60 Ahmed 46no) and sent Baslow II back for just 90.

In the Brian Winston Premier Cup, Jamie Carrington smashed an almighty 209 out of Parkhead’s mammoth 342-4. Civil Service were bowled out for 154 in reply. Will Newton made 76 in Hundall’s 175 as they went on to beat Sheffield University Staff by 43 runs.
