One of Sheffield’s top winter sports stars, James Woods, has been grabbing glory ‘down under’.

The Crosspool lad is currently in New Zealand and hitting the heights again on the AFP (Association Of Freeskiing Professionals)World Tour.

Late last month, ‘Woodsy’ came out on top in the slopestyle event at the Freeski Open of New Zealand, having qualified in first place.

He said after the event: “My first run was good but I knew I had more to give.

“When the level of competition is so high, you can’t play around. My goal is always to ski the best I can so I wanted to improve. I’m really proud of the rail section and the kickers were smooth. I went big and that felt good.”

That victory was followed up last week with another impressive finish, in a competitive field, this time in third at the One Hit Wonder event in Thredbo Village, New South Wales.

The next stage of the AFP World Tour comes at the end of November when it moves a little closer to home as Skeikampen in Norway hosts the Freeski Cup.
