STAFF at Sheffield’s English Institute of Sport are calling on local people to vote for Jess Ennis and Nicola Adams at this year’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards.
Friends and colleagues of the Olympic gold medallists, who train at EIS, are encouraging people in the city to get behind the duo who are among the 12 nominees for the BBC award, which will be presented on December 16.
Ennis, who came third at the 2009 Sports Personality of the Year event at Sheffield Arena, won heptathlon gold in London with two personal bests and a stylish 800m victory on Super Saturday.
Adams made history when she became the first ever female boxing Olympic medallist winning gold in the Flyweight final.
Nicola said: “I couldn’t believe it when I heard I was on the shortlist, it is surreal! There are so many other great sporting champions in this Olympic year so it’s incredible to be a nominee.
“My life has transformed since the Olympics. Everywhere I go people want autographs and photos/ It is great how the public have taken to me and appreciate the effort I have put in to achieve the dream.”
Other women on the shortlist include Olympic gold medallist Katherine Grainger and Paralympic champions Sarah Storey and Ellie Simmonds.
