Vardy winner delights Steels

STOCKSBRIDGE Park Steels gained their first home Unibond league win of the season with a 2-1 victory over Gresley Rovers, while Sheffield FC were knocked off the top of the table following a 1-0 home defeat against Warrington Town.

Worksop Town went someway to avenging an FA Cup defeat when they drew 1-1 at Kendal Town.

Steels victory over Gresley Rovers made it just one defeat from the last eight. Stocksbridge took a deserved 22nd minute lead when Brett Lovell glanced home Mark Ward's free-kick.

Jamie Vardy scored what proved to be the winner in the 63rd minute, curling a shot round the keeper from 18-yards. Gresley had pulled one back midway through the second half with a strike from David Blenkinsopp.

Sheffield looked like they might make it four wins on the bounce but were rocked when Warrington hit a 26th-minute winner through Chris Moores. Warrington looked to catch Sheffield on the break and were thankful to see a late Karl Colley header ruled out.

Ten-man Retford United moved back to the top of the UniBond North Division One with a 2-0 home victory over Shepshed Dynamo. Retford lost Adrian Littlejohn on the stroke of half-time for an alleged stamp. But Retford edged in front through Ryan Hindley before Mark Ashton sealed the points.

Worksop Town dropped into the Premier Division's bottom three despite a 1-1 draw at Kendal Town.

The Tigers found themselves trailing when Peter Wright curled a 20th minute effort over Steve Hernandez.

Striker Kevin Sansay, grabbed the equaliser from the penalty spot on 48 minutes after being bundled over.

Managerless Frickley Athletic were hammered 7-2 at Ashton United despite taking a two goal lead through Danny Walsh and Richard Tracey.

Buxton were beaten for the fourth time in five games at home when Stamford grabbed 88th minute winner after the hosts had twice fought back to draw level through a Steve Ridley free-kick and Mark Reed.

Matlock Town extend their unbeaten home record to five games in a 1-1 draw with Gateshead which ended the visitors' 100 percent league record. The Gladiators took the lead after just 40 seconds through a Simon Barraclough header. Gateshead equalised through Ian Robson but Matlock should have taken all three points but Barraclough saw his 81st minute penalty saved.

Former Parkgate striker Brian Cusworth scored twice as Alfreton Town won for the first time in five games by beating Worcester City 3-1 in the Conference North.

Kris Bowler had given the Reds fifth minute lead before City hit back with a 23rd minute equaliser but Cusworth's first half brace settled matters.
