Two in a row for ambitious Steelers side

SHEFFIELD Steelers toasted a second successive victory at the weekend as they continued their bright start to this season's Men's North of England League.

The ambitious Division Two outfit, eager to win promotion to the Premier Division after last year's relegation, proved too strong for Boardman and Eccles in their first home match of the 2007-08 campaign.

Steelers triumphed 10-6 having always been ahead, with Ben Lyon the star performer with five goals.

Leading 5-2 at half-time, the Abbeydale Sports Club side never looked back.

Omar Dupree netted a hat-trick, and Pete Sylvester and Alex Williams were also on the scoresheet.

"We played really well," said club captain Sam Glover. "We wanted to play solidly at the back and improve our offensive game - and that's what we did.

"We stopped their American player from getting into the game and eventually they ran out of ideas. We moved the ball around really well."

Steelers edged Manchester Waconians 6-3 last weekend on opening day and, with key players coming back into the side ahead of Saturday's visit to Oldham, Glover is confident the team can stretch their unbeaten run to three matches.

"Dave Alcock (attacker) and Mark Colton (midfielder) are both back for our next match and Gaz Morgan (the England defender) could play," added Glover.

"But I have to give special praise to Alex Kallagher who did great."

Steelers A toasted their second successive win of the season in Division Four after a hard-fought 5-3 win away to Poynton B at London Road North. The club's second-string beat Boardman and Eccles A 8-6 at home last weekend.
