Sheffield’s Jonny Marray is hoping for better when the ATP World Tour returns to Europe next week.

Marray and doubles partner Colin Fleming were knocked out of the Shanghai Rolex Masters yesterday by No 2 seeds Marc Lopez and Marcel Granollers 6-2 6-4 in a one-sided match that the Spanish pair comfortably won to set up a quarter-final tie against compatriots David Marrero and Fernando Verdasco.

Marray and Fleming reached the last eight at the China Open in Beijing last week before making it through to the last 16 in Shanghai.

The pair will return to action at the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Switzerland, on October 21 with Marray saying they need to do better.

“It was a pretty average trip to China,” he told The Star.

“They (Lopez and Granollers) were a lot better than us. We weren’t clinical enough.”

However, fellow British players Dominic Inglot and Jamie Murray reached the last eight in Shanghai with partners Treat Huey and John Peers respectively.
