JONNY Marray harbours hopes he might earn a place in Britain’s Davis Cup squad.

Sheffield’s Wimbledon men’s doubles chamnpion thrust himself into the limelight with his historic success which sees him gain entry to major tournaments including the forthcoming US Open.

Good performances would push his claim to challenge for a doubles place in the squad. The next Davis Cup tie is not until next February so the 31-year-old has time to press any claim. Marray was in the Davis Cup squad in 2004 but did not play.

“I’d love to be involved but Colin (Fleming) and Ross (Hutchins) are an established team and it would be hard to shift them,” said Marray.

Meanwhile, the Sheffield and District Tennis Championships continue at Hallamshire Tennis Club this week ahead of Finals Day on Saturday.

Results include:

Men’s Singles: James Riley (Graves) bt Charlie Pick (Chesterfield) 6-4 6-0.

Ladies qtr-final: Louise Holtum
