ROTHERHAM swimmer Joe Roebuck will resist the temptation to embark on some ‘winter tinkering’ as he looks to end four years of Olympic hurt next summer.

Roebuck’s career has been on an upward curve since he missed out on selection for the Beijing Games in 2008 by a fraction of a second.

However, the highs of 2010 – two Commonwealth silver medals and European bronze – were replaced by painful lows this summer as the 26-year-old failed to make the final of any of his three events at the World Championships.

That Shanghai setback could quite easily have led to a winter training overhaul with the biggest meet of Roebuck’s life on the horizon in 2012.

However the Rotherham ace maintains tearing up his swimming schedule is the last thing he needs to do to secure his Olympic berth next year.

“Basically I am just going to be doing this winter the same things that I have been doing for the last few years because that has worked well,” said Roebuck who as part of British Gas’s Big Splash campaign is urging people to take up swimming for 30 minutes once a week.

“I struggled in Shanghai and that was disappointing but I knew that that was due to a couple of injuries and niggles I had rather than not getting good training in during the winter. So I was never going to panic or anything like that.”

Roebuck will need to hit top form at the Olympic trials in March – an event that will double up as the 2012 test event at the Aquatics Centre in London.

“Missing out on Beijing, in a way, has been a blessing in disguise because it made me realise how much I wanted it and it has helped me to improve since then,” added Roebuck, who is helping to promote the 1,000 pools across the UK offering Big Splash events, taster sessions, and special offers to customers.

“It drove me on and has made me even more determined to do well and get to the next one here in London.”

British Swimming’s Big Splash campaign is supported by principal partner British Gas, and supporting partners Kellogg’s and Speedo.
