DONCASTER Dartes failed to make it a hat-trick of wins in the third annual Team Jorvik Viking Sprints meeting in Leeds at the weekend.

Although Dartes split their squad into three and were mainly represented by assistant coach Kevin Nicholas’s junior development squad swimmers (predominately 11 years and under) they still managed to claim third spotout of 23 teams from all over Yorkshire.

Doncaster also enjoyed strong representation from Armthorpe Kingfishers, who finished ninth, Rossington Rascals, 10th, and South Axholme Sharks, 11th.

Dartes dominated the honours in the top swimmer awards.

Robbie Casson brought home the nine year-old boys’ trophy with medals in every event. He won three golds, a silver and a bronze.

Emma Stringer was nine-year-old girls runner-up with a gold and two silvers.

Dartes swimmers took five of the top 14 places in the 10 year old girls’ trophy. Lauren Heywood was the best placed overall finishing third best girl with a medal of each colour. Right behind her with three medals of her own was Lucy Clarke.

In the 10 year-old boys’ trophy, Ryan Selman finished third best after claiming a gold and three minor medals

One of Dartes late-starting 14 year-old girls, Leanne Davies, won two gold, two silver and a bronze to take the individual honours.

She had started the day at Adwick swimming pool at 6am to complete her usual 5,000m Dartes’ workout - a session which included a demanding test set of two 800m (32 length) timed swims - before heading of for Leeds in the afternoon.

A pair of gold medals for Tonika Holdsworth proved only good enough for second overall in the girls’ 13 year trophy. She missed out to former clubmate Carragh Chambers-Hey representing South Axholme Sharks.

Carragh just pipped her with an additional silver in a one-two for Doncaster swimmers.

Dartes’ age-grouper Katy Burton, representing Armthorpe, proved the best of the 11 year olds.

Her club-mate Bethan Hammond Jones did the same in the girls’ 12 year event.

Armthorpe’s ex-Darte Ben Long, finished runner-up up in the 12 years boys. Doncaster rivals Joshua Sellars and Joshua Reasbeck finished third and and fourth respectively.
