Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has called for Sheffield’s world squash champion Nick Matthew to be included in the final shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2013.
Matthew won the title for the third time earlier this month.
Mr Clegg, Liberal Democrat MP for Sheffield Hallam, said: “In Sheffield we’re all immensely proud of Nick Matthew’s achievements, which should place him amongst the most successful British sports people of his generation.
“Not many people can boast of being a gold medal winning three time world champion.
“He has done more than enough to deserve to follow in the footsteps of our other Sheffield sporting greats who have been shortlisted in recent years.”
