Semi-final exit frustrates Nick

NICK Matthew admitted the better player won after the Sheffield star lost in the semi-finals of the US Open to old foe Ramy Ashour.

The 32-year-old, seeded two, crashed out of the tournament he won in 2007 and reached the final of last year after losing 15-13, 8-11, 11-8, 11-4 to the Egyptian.

Ashour faces Gregory Gaultier in the final after the Frenchman dumped out world No 1 James Willstrop.

Matthew posted on Twitter: “I could make excuses as to why I didn’t win but the honest truth is the better player won.”

In a gruelling 74-minute encounter, Matthew let slip a 10-6 advantage in the first game. He conceded: “It’s not the first time I’ve lost a lead like I had in the first to Ramy.”
