SHEFFIELD star Nick Matthew rates his hard-fought victory over James Willstrop in the final of the JP Morgan Tournament of Champions as one of the best of his career.
The 31-year-old edged a gruelling 85-minute contest 8-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-7 at a packed Vanderbilt Hall at Grand Central Station, New York. It means Matthew replaces Willstrop at the top of the PSA world rankings.
A jubilant Matthew, who has beaten Willstrop 20 times in 28 meetings, said: “This win is right alongside the Worlds and Commonwealth Games gold medals as my best victories.”
Both Matthew and Willstrop are set to compete in the British National Championships in Manchester next month.
