WORLD number two Nick Matthew booked his place in the quarter-finals of the World Championships last night with a hard-fought victory over Tarek Momen.
The 32-year-old, who hails from Sheffield, prevailed 11-8 11-9 13-11 against the 13th seed. Matthew trailed 6-0 in the second game but won critical video review penalty point decisions at 8-6 and 9-7 up in the third.
Now Matthew, the winner of last year’s tournament, faces Amr Shabana, the four-time former world champion in the last eight in Doha. The Egyptian defeated Alister Walker.
