Tigers wary of opponents’ new boys

TIGERS are hoping to avoid the Newport effect when they face two vital meetings in three days, starting tonight.

Eric Boocock’s men face Scunthorpe at Owlerton in a vital Premier League clash and the Scoprions have recently signed Michael Palm Toft as an investment in the future from Denmark.

And on Saturday they head to Premier League newcomers Leicester who have just snapped up Finnish international Kauko Nieminen in a doubling-up role with Elite League Lakeside.

“Both sides have strengthened and hopefully it won’t be a similar situation to when we went to Newport and were beaten in the week they signed Jason Doyle,” said Tigers owner Neil Machin.

“We have been in great form at home recently, which was underlined by our victory against Edinburgh at home last week. Scunthorpe won’t be pushovers - we all remember David Howe’s spectacular maximum for them at Owlerton last year - and it will be interesting to see what difference their new man makes.

“Leicester will be hard to beat with Kauko in the side but we’ve got to go there and win.”

Sheffield are at full strength against Scorpions, who include former Tigers mascot Ben Wilson. The British Under-21 champion always enjoys returning to his former club.
