Sheffield co-promoter Damien Bates has warned his riders they are battling to keep their places as the injury-hit club ponder their options ahead of the play-offs.

Having seen influential reserve Arthur Sissis join skipper Simon Stead on the injury list for the remainder of the season, Bates has confirmed the Tigers are looking at bringing two new riders into the fold.

With the club on the lookout for both a No.1 and a reserve plus fans’ favourite Andre Compton also on the comeback trail after his wrist injury, he says his middle order riders in particular must perform if they are to hold onto their team places.

They responded to his threat in perfect fashion with a stunning 51-39 win over table-topping Edinburgh on Thursday – and with the play-offs rapidly approaching, Bates is working tirelessly to strengthen their side to bolster their bid for a first Premier League title since 2002.

“I’ve spoken to a couple of riders, who will obviously remain nameless at this stage,” Bates revealed.

“We’ve got to replace Arthur (Sissis) now he’s out for the season, and ideally we’d like to bring in a No.1 as well.

“We’ve been trying to do that all season, but there are a couple of options we are exploring now so hopefully that works out.

“We’ve got Andre (Compton) wanting his team place back now as well, so the riders in the middle order need to pull their fingers out otherwise Andre is there ready to take their team places.

“We know what Andre is capable of so with him waiting in the wings the riders we have need to be at their best otherwise we have an ideal replacement to come in for the play-offs.

“It’s all a numbers game, but with two riders we are looking to replace we have some scope for different combinations.

“With Arthur and Steady out we have around 14 points to play with combined which could give us two strong riders which would keep Josh (Bates) at reserve which might be an option.

“We are looking at a few things, but it’s not easy this late in the season so we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”
