A magnificent paid maximum from guest Richard Lawson led Sheffield to victory over Newcastle at Owlerton last night.

Lawson went through the card with a fine display whilst replacing Simon Stead in the Tigers’ No.1 spot as they secured a vital victory against the play-off chasing Diamonds.

No.5 Adam Roynon also put in a sensational showing as he continues to go from strength-to-strength in his comeback from injury - bagging double figures and forming a formidable top two with Lawson.

The heat-leader duo combined for a vital 5-1 in Heat 13 to give their side control entering the closing stages - before a further maximum in Heat 15 gave them all three Premier League points.

The hosts had kicked the meeting off in perfect fashion as Joe Haines and Lawson combined for a 5-1 in the opening race of the night.

Argentinean Facundo Albin then picked off Lewis Kerr on the final lap of Heat 4 to take third whilst Roynon took the chequered flag to extend their advantage to six.

Yet the meeting was soon turned on its head as Newcastle 5-1s in Heats 5 and 8 left Sheffield four behind after nine races.

However, Ricky Wells and Albin combined to bring the Tigers back onto level terms entering the interval - before the exceptional Lawson and Roynon joined forces for a priceless Heat 13 maximum.

A slice of luck ensured Tigers took their lead into the final heat as an untimely Diamonds engine failure cost them a race advantage in Heat 14, before Roynon and Lawson wrapped up an excellent win.

Ricky Wells, Facundo Albin, Joe Haines and Damien Koppe all chipped in with vital points - whilst Andre Compton also enjoyed a solid return to complete a strong team performance.

* SHEFFIELD 49: Roynon 13, Lawson 12+3, Compton 5+1, Wells 5+1, Koppe 5, Haines 5, Albin 4+1.
