Tigers continued their perfect start to the League Cup programme with a fine win over Newcastle at Owlerton last night.
Under new ownership and looking to bounce back from two disappointing seasons, Sheffield made it two victories out of two with a 48-41 triumph following a determined showing.
A brilliant all-around team display ensured they fended off a strong Diamonds side to take three League Cup points and seize control of the Northern Group.
A magnificent night for inspirational skipper Simon Stead led the Owlerton outfit to victory as he reeled off four straight wins in his final four outings from the No.1 position.
It was a victory for Stead in heat six which helped Sheffield take the upper hand, as flying Dane Simon Nielsen battled his way through on the final lap to join him at the front. That huge 5-1 put the hosts six clear after middle order duo Taylor Poole and Leigh Lanham had combined to the same effect moments earlier.
Stead and Poole then linked up in heat 15 for a hard-earned 4-2 to wrap up victory and ensure Sheffield snatched all three points.
It was a tremendous conclusion to what was an excellent evening for Poole, as he helped form a potent partnership with Lanham to support the fantastic Stead. The exciting Aussie fended off the hard charging Stuart Robson in calm fashion in his opening ride to take the chequered flag before passing Chris Schramm in the penultimate race of the night to help protect his sides’ lead.
Club legend Andre Compton rolled down the years at reserve with two pivotal race wins in his opening two rides.
Tigers will welcome Scunthorpe to Owlerton next Thursday.
