Sheffield were denied a valuable home win last night as Ipswich grabbed a last-gasp draw at Owlerton.
The Tigers were desperate not to lose a third home match in a row and they managed that, but it could have been so much more.
They always seemed to have a slight edge over the visitors but never managed to get a clear lead as the sides traded heat advantages in the early exchanges.
Victories for Andre Compton, Ricky Wells and Richard Lawson in the first six heats meant Sheffield led by four but the lead never stretched any further than that and in the end it came back to haunt them.
With three races to go the Tigers were still four points up, but when Jason Doyle and Morten Risager got a 4-2 in heat 13 the Witches sniffed a chance to get something from the meeting.
A 3-3 in the penultimate race set up yet another last-heat decider at Owlerton and for the second week running Sheffield didn’t get the result they wanted. Australian star Doyle raced to a win and visiting skipper Leigh Lanham pinched third to hand the Suffolk side a draw and two league points.
Ricky Wells once again top-scored for the Tigers on 15, while Andre Compton had his best night of the season with 13.
Sheffield: Wells 15, Compton 13, Lawson 8, Albin 5+1, Greenwood 3+2, Maassen 1, Roynon R/R.
