TIGERS boss Eric Boocock reckons the stage is set for the best Premier League Riders’ Championship for years.
And he says that Owlerton is still the best track for the showpiece event – despite calls that it gives the Tigers representatives an unfair advantage.
Sheffield once again host the meeting this Sunday, when fans from every Premier League club are set to travel to support their representative.
Boocock, who celebrates his 50th anniversary in speedway this year, reckons that even though Tigers duo Shane Parker and Ricky Ashworth will head the favourites’ list, it’s still wide open. “Of course there’s a home advantage. There aren’t many tracks where someone doesn’t have that,” said Boocock. “But Shane and Ricky will have more pressure on their shoulders because they will be expected to do well and that can often work against a rider. There are so many riders who can win it and they’ll be doing battle on what I still think is the fairest track in British speedway. We’ll have a great crowd and a great stadium and there’s every chance it will be the best PLRC for years.
“Most riders love riding this track because they know they can wind the throttle on and have a real go.
“A lot of what happens on the day in a meeting like this is down to preparation in the workshop. You know you are going to need a lot of speed on a track like ours and I would expect each of the riders on display to be well prepared because they’re the top rider from every club.
“The atmosphere on the occasion of the PLRC is something special. The meeting means so much to the riders, it is the highlight of the season for many of them and I’m sure it will be a classic.”
