Richard Lawson will step in for Simon Stead for a third time this week when injury-hit Tigers travel to Plymouth tonight.

Stead cannot race for his club during the Monster Energy FIM Speedway World Cup under the sport’s regulations; even though he was watching at Owlerton on Monday during the Somerset match. And Tigers chiefs have spent the last 48 hours looking for guests to replace injured stars Andre Compton, Leigh Lanham and Ty Proctor.

Compton needs rest after his crash on Monday, Lanham has a back injury which also needs rest and Proctor could be out for the season (thigh.)

Promoter Damien Bates said: “To have an injury crisis of this extent in our first season at the club is unbelievable. It’s been a nightmare scrambling around trying to plug the gaps and it means we have a makeshift team at Plymouth. When we knew Simon would be in the World Cup team we decided to give Richard Lawson all the meetings. He enjoys riding for Sheffield.

“In many ways I’m pleased we did because it’s one less thing to worry about as we plug the rest of the gaps. But it’s not about people feeling sorry for us, the most important thing is the lads who are injured get themselves right. Fingers crossed they will be back racing soon, but we will have to see on that. When we started the week looking forward to the Sky match I’d never have believed this was going to happen. But we have to get on with it.” Bates was still working on booking guests last night.
