Devils defeat leaves Tigers having to work hard for second spot

SHEFFIELD Tigers crashed to a disappointing defeat at bottom of the table Plymouth, giving themselves more work to do if they are to finish second in the Premier League table.

The Tigers were two points up going in to the final heat but captain Shane Parker and Thursday night’s hero Josh Auty were on the receiving end of a 5-1 and that handed the home side a two point victory. It was a shock ending for Sheffield after they gave themselves an excellent chance of a vital away win.

They had regained the lead after heat 13 with a 5-1 for Parker and Auty, but they couldn’t hold on. Hugh Skidmore had accrued three points before he crashed heavily in his fourth ride and had to withdraw with concussion, while team manager Eric Boocock juggled his rider replacement rides well to gain six paid seven from Ricky Ashworth’s programmed races.

The Tigers sensed a victory was on the cards when Plymouth number one and Great Britain World Cup star Ben Barker pulled out after just one ride, but the Devils riders stepped up and recorded important wins at key stages.

It was a disheartening result for the Owlerton side, who must now pick up wins from their final two meetings if they are to secure second place in the Premier League table.

n SHEFFIELD: Josh Auty 15, Emiliano Sanchez 9+1, Simon Lambert 8+2, Shane Parker 7+3, Hugh Skidmore 3+1, Ashley Birks 2, Rider Replacement for Ricky Ashworth.
