South Yorkshire started their British Parks County Championship campaign against North Staffordshire with the home leg at Davy Sports Club where visiting parks teams traditionally struggle to come to terms with the lack of a crown.

Somewhat surprisingly two Wendy Smith Trophy winners Jack Clarke and Chris Hill lost their games but everyone else won for a 241-172 aggregate.

Mick Hobson won 21-10, Steve Lonnia 21-20, Peter Worfolk 21-9, Mark Johnson 21-16, Joe Westell 21-6, Paul Wildgoose 21-17, Chris Fowler 21-12, Matt Beever 21-19, Andy Turner 21-11 and Gary Ainley 21-10.

The away team also won with seven winners (230-185) at Norton Central WMC on the outskirts of Stoke. Ernie Wearing won 21-9, Richard Atkin 21-20, Chris Kelly 21-9, Ross Meese 21-10, Mark Crawshaw 21-13, Ryan Clark 21-10 and Craig Hill 21-19.

The overall match score was 24-7 in favour of South Yorkshire. North Derbyshire suffered a narrow setback against Birkenhead losing 16-15 in the other qualifying group.
