Sheffield starlet Joel Walker’s dream of a Crucible debut was crushed at Ponds Forge International Sports Centre on Thursday.

The 21-year-old fell at the first hurdle in his quest to become the city’s first representative in a World Championship since the competition moved here in 1977.

Walker was beaten 10-6 in the opening qualifying round by Stuart Carrington, having trailed 5-4 overnight.

Walker recently stated that he thinks about showcasing his talent at the home of snooker “more or less every time he picks up his cue”.

But the talented youngster will have to wait another year for the chance to perform in front of his home crowd.

Fellow Sheffield potter Adam Duffy faces either Sam Baird or Tony Drago in his second qualifying match on Sunday.
