Sheffield has a new world champion.
Freestyle skier Katie Summerhayes today won the slopestyle event at the World Junior Ski Championships in Chiesa in Valmalenco, Italy.
The 18 year old, who finished seventh in her Olympics debut in Sochi earlier this year, had qualified for the finals after a first run score of 82.40 was followed up by 86.20 in her second run, which placed Summerhayes in second place behind Norway’s Johanne Killi.
However, a superb first run in the final which scored 86.80 was enough for the Sheffield teen, who had finished in third place last year, to win the event and push Killi into second.
Katie tweeted afterwards: “Pretty stoked to be the new World Junior Champion!”
She then added: “Thanks to my coach Pat Sharples. Couldn’t have done any of it without you.”
