WHEATLEY Hills dropped a place to finish fourth in North East One after going down 21-17 in their last game of the season at home to lowly Northern.
The injury-hit Doncaster side were without top try-scorer Gaz Burns (blood infection).
Wheatley, who started with three Under-19s players. took an early lead when winger Lee Wallace scored his first senior try, which Jack Craswell goaled from touch.
The visitors, who needed a point to retain their North East One status, hit back with a brace of first-half penalties.
Wheatley started the second half on top with centre Mickey Hayward beating two defenders on a 30 metre run to the line.
Johnny Marshall extended Wheatley’s lead to 17-6 after joining the line out wide to claim their third try.
But Northern went on to win with a great rally.
