Tigers foiled by disallowed tries

Have your say

Sheffield Tigers went down 19-15 at National Two (North) rivals Harrogate after having two tries disallowed in a close match.

The referee pulled back a try for a forward pass and also ruled out a score for a knock-on while over the line, either of which could’ve given Tigers a second consecutive victory. Full-back Pete Swatkins touched down after nine minutes to put Tigers ahead after stepping up into the line to make the extra man, but Harrogate fought back to go ahead but Tigers second row Gregor Hayter scored on 49 minutes from a catch and drive in the corner. And a third try came in similar style, right winger Jon Feeley touching down as Tigers went 12-15 ahead. But Harrogate re-took the lead.

Sheffield fought from behind for a 19-17 victory over Wheatley Hills at Abbeydale Park. But Wheatley salvaged a losing bonus point when Donal Collins missed two late penalty attempts for Sheffield. Penalty goals provided the only scores of a scrappy first half.

Wheatley’s stand-off Guy Townsley put the visitors ahead after seven minutes, but Sheffield quickly levelled with a penalty from Collins. Townsley and Collins again exchanged penalties, but Townsley added another. After Wheatley pressure late in the first half, Sheffield were penalised in front of the posts and Townsley put the visitors 12-6 ahead. Sheffield, with the breeze on their backs in the second half, snatched the lead when scrum-half Matt Poste raced over and Collins goaled it from the touchline.

Two more Collins penalties put Sheffield firmly in the driving seat at 19-12. Wheatley had the final say when flanker Byron Elliott was pushed over the Sheffield line from a rolling maul. Townsley missed what would have been the equalising conversion.

Dinnington were beaten at Driffield, where the home side ran in a staggering 11 tries in a 74-10 victory.

Barnsley are top of the Yorkshire Two after beating Hullensians 49-14 at Shaw Lane.

Wath on Dearne, last season’s Yorkshire 3 champions, crept up into the top half of Yorkshire Two with a 19-13 win at Doncaster Phoenix.

Rotherham Phoenix beat hosts Burley 31-3 in Yorkshire 3. Tom Jenkinson kicked three penalties, two conversions and a drop goal, while tries came from Luke Palethorpe, winger John Bunclarke and flanker Tom Coy.

Tries from Dave Pattimore and winger Rikki Davidson were not enough for Mosborough, who went down 16-10 at Harrogate Pythons in Yorks 4.

Stocksbridge ran in nine tries in a 10-67 win at Sheffield Oaks in Yorkshire 5.
