The success of Rotherham Titans this season-fourth in the Championship and semi-finalists in the promotion play-offs-has been recognised nationally with a prestigious award to their major player.
Juan Pablo Socino has been chosen as The Championship Player of the Season by the captains of the 12 clubs in the league.
The award was presented to Socino at a dinner in London last night organised by the Rugby Players’ Association.
The Argentinian centre, who played his last game for Rotherham last Saturday against Bristol at Abbeydale before his move to Premiership club Newcastle Falcons, had an outstanding season in the league, finishing with more than 300 points.
“I was thrilled to be nominated and it’s even better to win the award,” said Socino.“This prize is very special to me because it has been made by fellow players. I’ve had a most enjoyable season with a great group at Rotherham.
“The season has been good for me because it’s the first time I’ve scored 300 points and more. I put over more conversions than in my first year at Rotherham because of the way we’ve played expansive rugby.
“Without th e help of my teammates, I would not be receiving this award.”
In the Championship and in the semi-finals Socino scored 315 points-four tries, 50 conversions and 65 penalties.
Today he flies home to Buenos Aires to train with more than 50 Argentinians selected for this summer’s internationals.
