Hallamshire RUFC, Sheffield’s newest rugby union club, got their new season off to a flying start with a double victory after winning in both the Yorkshire 5 and Merit Table competitions.
After winning the Merit Table contest last season, Hallamshire were promoted to the Yorkshire leagues and began the season with a 18-10 victory away at Wibsey.
The following weekend, Hallamshire again were on the road with a visit to Wensleydale who, in the previous week, won 62-0 against Stanley Rods.
After falling 10-0 down, Hallamshire fought back with winger James Turvill and Josh Whild scoring a try apiece to win the game 12-10.
With Hallamshire’s first XV now playing in the Yorkshire leagues, the club’s second XV had been given the task of defending their Merit Table title before the season kicked off.
The second XV visited Stocksbridge for the opening game of the season and after losing an early 12-0 lead, Hallamshire showed their fighting spirit.
Captain John Ashford crossed the line, before winger Luke Dyson scored a brace.
Stocksbridge still held to lead in the dying embers of the game, but Hallamshire had the final word after Alex Stell capped off his debut with a try all of his own work after running from within his own half, to win 22-17.
