Prop Michael Cromie has been handed his full league debut for Rotherham Titans in the clash with London Welsh at Clifton Lane.

Cromie is one of several changes to the side that was badly beaten at Bedford last week and comes into a new-look front row with Jack Preece and Lewis Thiede who all impressed off the bench at Goldington Road.

Cromie has been used as a replacement in the league games at Bristol and then Bedford, but is now given the opportunity to make an impact from the kick off.

Capped by Ulster A and at U-20,U-19 and U-18 levels, Cromie joined Rotherham last summer from French club Stade Rodez who play at Aveyron in France.

Much is expected of the six footer but he could not have a tougher full Championship debut than against London Welsh, who were relegated last season from the Premiership carrying with them massive compensation.

Among the other changes, Barney Maddison and Tom Calladine return to the pack and in the backs, Jones has also made alterations for a game that grew in importance following the Bedford loss which saw Rotherham drop to seventh in the league.

Welshman Ross Jones takes over at fly half from Tom Barrett, who will be out with a serious foot injury for several weeks, and Sean Scanlon, whose form has been good so far this season, resumes his usual position at full back.

Rotherham’s ability to attack will also be improved by the recall of winger Michael Keating for a contest in which Rotherham are under pressure to perform to the highest standards that were missing at Bedford.

“If we don’t get it right against London Welsh, they will cause problems for us,” says Jones.

“We’ve had a good week preparing and the rubbish that surfaced at Bedford is out of the way.We have moved on and I expect a positive reaction from the players.

“I’ve changed the front row because when Cromie,Preece and Thiede were sent on at Bedford, they did well and played their part as we scored four second half tries.

“Ross Jones is comfortable at fly half, he played there for Bridgend and will be our place kicker tomorrow.”
