Boom time for fast growing Tigers

Tigers head coach Dan Richmond believes his side are starting to see the benefits of their hard work on the training ground, with his entire squad pushing to face high-flying Stourbridge this weekend.

Two wins out of three since the turn of the year has helped the Tigers close the gap to safety in the SSE National League Two North table to just a single point. One of those came against top four-side Sedgley Park, while before Christmas they pushed second-placed Macclesfield all the way before eventually losing 21-20.

Saturday presents them with another encounter against one of the league’s top sides in Stourbridge. Richmond insists his side hold no fear: “You look at the performances over the last four games and we have picked up 10 league points and I have been very pleased with large elements of the performances,” he said.“I can’t praise the players enough, they have really applied themselves. Our numbers at training are the highest they have ever been, we are putting two competitive teams out. It means I can look to rotate players because they are playing at a standard that warrants the first team jersey.

“We are really starting to see the rewards for the foundations that were set way back in July and August.”

In their previous encounter with Saturday’s opponents, the Tigers ran Stourbridge close before just losing out 14-17.

And with their record against the so-called top sides improving each week, Richmond is relishing the challenge facing them.

“We went on the road before Christmas and gave Macclesfield a very close run. The pleasing thing is the boys have learnt from that experience and have quickly been able to take on board how to close out tight games,” added Richmond.

“It’s a very simple game rugby, you have to do the basics well under pressure and control field position and play the game in the right areas.

“Stourbridge are a high flying team but it’s a fantastic opportunity for us to go and test ourselves away from home against one of the teams at the top of the league and see how we fair.”
