In an extraordinary game at Goldington Road, Rotherham were outclassed in the first half - embarrassingly so at times - but fought back strongly to score four tries after the interval to claim a bonus point from a 46-28 defeat.

The Titans were being thrashed 27-0 at the end of the first half having let in three tries, and it then seemed that they would go on to suffer a humiliating Championship defeat when Bedford added two more tries to lead 41-0 after 50 minutes.

Suddenly, though, the Rotherham forwards woke up, started to win decent possession and put themselves in promising attacking positions.

So much so that the pack laid on tries on 53, 62, 64 and 75 minutes and with full back Ross Jones converting the scores by Tim Cree, Ben Rath, the winger’s third in three matches, Jack Preece and Luke Carter, Rotherham were at long last competing. Three of the tries came from rolling mauls, and while the Titans showed a spirited revival, they had earlier handicapped themselves by being reduced to 14 men on two different occasions.

What should concern new coach Mark Jones is that Bedford, who scored six tries, three in each half, smashed the Rotherham defence far too easily.

Rotherham, who drop out of the top four in the Championship, host London Welsh a week today.

The Titans as well as improving their defence also need to play with much more self-control; the yellow cards against hooker Charlie Maddison and winger Curtis Wilson served only to help Bedford whose pace frequently ripped Rotherham apart.

The try which earned the bonus point from scrum half Luke Carter was his first for the club and coach Jones will be satisfied with the goal kicking of Ross Jones who put over four conversions.
