Sheffield Eagles sent out a message that they are on the way back as they outclassed Dewsbury Rams 46-10 to claim their second league win of the season.
They turned in a master class in defending and taking chances as they ran in eight tries with second rower Michael Knowles outstanding.
“This is what we have been waiting for and we were a lot better,” said coach Mark Aston. “We’re clicking into gear.
“We’ll get a lot of confidence out of this and get on a roll with a bit of momentum. We let ourselves down in a couple of games but that’s gone.”
The Eagles – who beat Dewsbury five times in all competitions last season – fielded four ex-Rams players including new signing Tom Lillycrop.
In their third game back at Owlerton they looked at home as they weathered an early charge by the Rams before taking the lead with two tries from winger Misi Taulapapa.
Rams should have pulled four points back but Ryan Wright lost control of the ball. Eagles’ response was swift with substitute hooker Gareth Owen’s break sending in centre Menzie Yere.
Dominic Brambani converted two of the tries for a 16-0 lead at half-time.
A snappy passing move between Mitch Stringer and Patch Walker with Knowles timing his run perfectly to increased the Eagles lead soon after the restart.
Eagles continued to give a lesson in taking chances with Yere offloading to Owen who raced in and when Walker’s kick hit an upright and bounced back Matt Garside was there to score.
Rams’ efforts were finally rewarded with two tries in three minute from second rower Wayne Godwin and fullback Louis Sheriff. Shane Grady converted the second try.
Knowles charged down a kick and followed up to dive on the bouncing ball for his second try.
In the final minutes winger Scott Turner follow up a Knowles kick for his eighth try of the season. Brambani finished with seven goals from eight attempts.
